The Waves

Secret Sumatra
There is an abundant variety of waves here, spots suited to all kinds of surfers. Down the end of the point there is a left and a right suited from the beginner to intermediate surfer, then up the road are spots comparable to some of the world class waves of Hawaii, Mexico and Tahiti which have been enjoyed by the surfer who is just starting to push their limits to the hardcore professional. There are over 15 waves they access in the area, lefts, rights, points, slabs, the beachies are comparable to Puerto Escondito or South Straddie on their day and are regarded as the best beach breaks in Indonesia. Straight out the front gate there are two short punchy hollow waves, a left and a right, probably the funnest waves in the area, offshore all day and only steps from your bungalow. Being at the centre of where south-west swells hit the coastline of Indonesia gives this area the advantage of consistency, it’s rarely flat and it pumps even when it’s small. Secret Sumatra have surfed these waves longer than anyone in the area and have the knowledge to get you the waves you’re after, small changes the local weather, tide and swell direction make a huge difference and that’s where they step in to score you waves like you see in the gallery at the top of this page, with a surf guide or two keeping you up to date with your options, you will be sure to score from day one on your limited time out from the real world.

The Camp

Plenty of great places to relax like the open plan outdoor entertainment area which is equip with a professional snooker table, an outdoor cinema and a sunken lounge area to kickback and read the latest mags or have a game of cards with your mates. There’s a separate area with a ping pong table, snorkelling gear is also available, just ask the barman and he will sort you out.
Hammocks are slung all over the place for relaxing with a bintang after a big day of pits. Surf check platform for sundowners overlooking the mountains and a perfect right, with another perfect left over the channel.

The Rooms

The room style is minimal. almost Japanese style but created with local influence with a sunken queen spring bed into a low polished concrete platform which also acts as like a large bedside table keeping anything you need in reach. There is a large mirror panelled in by local raw timber to keep the room open and minimal.

Your own private room with no sharing which means you’ll always get a good nights rest when you know the waves are going to be challenging the next day, this means no drunken idiot banging around the room when they come back from the bar, waking you up after one too many beers, or that fat bastard snoring his head off ruining your chi for the next day. Which some of the other camps in Indo haven’t allowed for.

Another great point with the private rooms is if your bringing the mrs over, it’s comfortable for her to relax in while you’re out getting pitted.

There’s a lockable compartment to keep you valuables safe, ceiling fans & a draw curtain mosquito net. Power is accessible on your bedside shelves on either side for charging any electricals and there are also more power points on your lockable table where you can charge things while being out of the way and or safely locked away. Laundry is also included in your stay with Secret Sumatra so conveniently located near the door is your laundry basket to help keep your clothes clean and out of the way.

The Food

The food is varied, healthy and best of all bottomless so you eat until your full and then if you want you can still eat some more… Just watch out tho, you are there to get barrelled not to lie around in a food coma all day..

Some of the meals they prepare for the guests are.. BBQ’d fish caught that day, fresh and full of protien. The classic old nasi goreng.. Chipotle slow cooked beef burritos, Beef rendang, Chicken soft tacos, Burgers, Sashimi, Sandwiches, Banana Pancakes, Banana Porridge  and and plenty of tasty asian and local meals you probably didn’t even know existed.

If your vegetarian or you have any dietary need, don’t hesitate to let them know on the night you arrive and they will cater to you personally to suit your diet.
