There is surf year around in Fiji, defined by two seasons. One is from April to October when the low pressure systems in the Southern Hemisphere produce consistent ground swells which can get up to 8-10’ft (12-20ft faces for the Americans out there). Then there’s the summer season from December to April which is associated with shorter duration swells, 1-3 days. During this time though the conditions could be called ‘tropical’ as it is glassy or light winds all day and hot with afternoon showers.
All of the breaks are over coral reef and when over head high can be challenging for the inexperienced surfers. This is more of an area for intermediate to experienced surfers.
Breaks accessed include:
J’s – A fast, hollow right hander that is good up to 6 Foot. With the right swell direction this thing can run the length of the reef offering plenty of opportunities for turns and the odd tube section.
Fiji Pipe – As the name suggests, this is a hollow left. With size, it offers some pretty heavy tubes, perfect for those who want to take their surfing to the next level. When smaller, it’s a playful left offering walls to lay some rail.
Frigates – A world class left hander, comparable to Cloudbreak. This long left hander can throw a variety of sections at you, from long hollow tubes, to big walls for long drawn out carves.
Shifties – A deep water right hander that picks up a lot of swell. Usually accessed when everywhere else is too small, Shifties is a pretty user friendly wave, and can be a super fun time for all involved.
Vunanui – A fun wedgey right hander with an end bowl that just screams “hit me!”. On high tide it’s a good wave for the kids on the end.
The deluxe room has been created for the tropical getaway with maximum use of glass & louvres, fan cooled, fully screened and mosquito nets. These large rooms have an ensuite with hot and cold water, king size bed or king singles, a sitting area and private deck. The resort places a high priority on the quality of food and service. There is a fully stocked bar in the restaurant which overlooks the swimming pool and out to the lagoon and surf breaks. The bures are such that with friends or family you can open the adjoining doors and socialise or they can be locked off – it’s up to you.
The bures can accommodate up to 2 adults and 1 child (king bed and one single) and can also fit a cot into the bure.
Matanivusi’s restaurant offers an eclectic fusion of Fijian, Indian and contemporary dishes using only the freshest ingredients. The pride themselves on being a sustainable restaurant by using fruits grown from around the property depending on the season, vegetables cultivated in the local villages and fresh Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi from the daily catches brought in at Suva harbor.
